Kevin Perez (born April 20, 2003), known professionally as Kay Flock, is an American rapper and songwriter. He rose to fame through a variety of singles, most notably "Not in the Mood" by Lil Tjay, which would peak at number 61 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Early life
Kay grew up within the Bronx, which he described as "dangerous". During his teen years, he would listen to Brooklyn drill artists, as well as King Von. During his time at school, he would attempt to play baseball and basketball; however, the sports would "fizzle out after school".[1]
Musical career
Following his release from juvenile detention in March of 2020, and at the urging of his friend B-Lovee, Kay Flock released his debut single "FTO" in May of 2020. Upon the song being posted to Triller (app)|Triller, Lil Tjay would share it, resulting in Kay gaining followers in New York City. "FTO" was followed by "Opp Spotter", which featured B-Lovee and, as of December 2021, had 8 million views on YouTube and 3 million streams on Spotify.[2]
In 2021, Kay released "Being Honest", which sampled "changes" by XXXTentacion;[3] the song was said to be "reminiscent of G Herbo" and was named within Pitchfork (website)’s top 38 rap songs of 2021 and top 100 songs of 2021.[4] In November - following the release of his debut mixtape The D.O.A. Tape - Kay was named Billboard (magazine) Hip Hop Rookie of the Month.[5] During an interview with XXL (magazine)|XXL, he stated that his style was compared to rappers King Von and Pop Smoke,[2] with Asian Doll saying that Von would've been a fan of Kay Flock.[6]
