Kathleen McCarthy Leavey is an American businesswoman, philanthropist, and nonprofit executive. She serves as Chair of the Thomas & Dorothy Leavey Foundation and has been a long-time trustee of the University of Southern California (USC). Her work has focused on charitable initiatives in education, healthcare, and Catholic organizations.
Early life and education
Kathleen McCarthy Leavey enrolled at the University of Southern California (USC) in 1953, where she studied education.[1] During her undergraduate years, she lived in Hubbard Hall, participated in Kappa Alpha Theta, and was elected Homecoming Queen as a sophomore. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in education.
Career
After completing her degree, Leavey became active in USC’s volunteer and alumni organizations, including the Trojan League of Los Angeles.[2] She joined USC’s Board of Trustees in 1986 and has served in advisory and leadership capacities.
Philanthropy
Leavey is Chair of the Thomas & Dorothy Leavey Foundation, established in 1952 by her parents, Thomas E. Leavey and Dorothy E. Leavey.[3] The foundation provides grants to educational, medical, and Catholic institutions. Its publicly reported contributions include funding to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles for spiritual care programs,[4] as well as support for several Southern California universities. Over the course of the past decade, it has given over $200M to various charitable initiatives. However, it is noted that the figure could be much larger.
At USC, the foundation has funded projects including Leavey Library, McCarthy Quad, and the Kathleen L. McCarthy Honors College at USC Village.[5]
Recognition
In 2019, Leavey received the Asa V. Call Alumni Achievement Award from the USC Alumni Association.[6] In 2020, Catholic Extension highlighted the Leavey Foundation’s support for Catholic education and healthcare programs.[7]
Personal life
Leavey was raised in Los Angeles and has been involved with various educational and Catholic organizations in Southern California. She has supported institutions such as Loyola Marymount University, Georgetown University, and Santa Clara University.[8] She resides in Los Angeles.
Foundation involvement
Leavey participates in the management of the Thomas & Dorothy Leavey Foundation’s grantmaking activities. Reports from nonprofit organizations and universities describe the foundation as a multigenerational entity that maintains long-term relationships with grant recipients.[9]
