Karl Maeder (born 2008) is a Swiss kitefoiler.[1] Maeder is currently on the SKA Youth U21 Kite Sailing team.[2] He is the younger brother of Singaporean kitefoil athlete and Olympic bronze medalist Maximilian Maeder. [3][4] His best ranking in Men's Formula Kite is 38th.[5]
Maeder began kitesurfing at the age of six. Initially, his interest in the sport was casual, but it grew significantly when he started competing internationally at the age of nine. As he traveled around the world to participate in competitions, his passion for the sport deepened. Maeder was captivated by the competitive aspect of racing, describing it as a unique thrill that hooked him from the moment he started competing on the racecourse.[2]
Career
2021: Beginnings
In 2021, Maeder placed 24th at the Formula Kite U19 Individual World Championship in July and 29th at the KiteFoil World Series, Act 3, in Cagliari in October. Earlier in the year, he competed in the KiteFoil World Series, Act 1, in Gizzeria and finished 42nd at the KiteFoil World Series, Act 4, in Jandia in November.[5]
2022–2023: Establishing consistency
In 2022, Maeder secured 9th place at the Formula Kite Pan American Championships on November 7th and 5th place at the Copa Brasil de Vela on October 23rd. He also competed in the Formula Kite Individual European Championships on September 24th, where he finished 41st. Earlier in the year, he took 11th place at the Open Swiss Formula Kite Championships in September and 28th at the A's Youth Foil & Formula Kite Youth World Championships (U21) in May.[5]
In 2023, Maeder secured 13th place at the U21 World Championships in Gizzeria, Italy, and achieved a 9th place finish at the World series Act 1 in Traunsee, Austria. He also competed at the U21 European Championships in Torregrande, Italy, where he finished 16th.[2]
2024: Recent competitions and recognition
In 2024, Maeder competed in several prestigious Formula Kite events. At the Youth World Championships held on July 1st, he placed 18th. Earlier in the year, he finished 30th at the Formula Kite World Championships on May 11th and secured 19th place at the Semaine Olympique Française De Voile 'Last Chance Regatta' on April 21st. He also participated in the Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofia / World Cup Series on March 29th, finishing 37th, and concluded the Formula Kite European Championships on March 15th with a 43rd place finish.[1]
After the 2024 Paris Olympics, Maeder has gained traction for being Maximilian Maeder's younger brother. What captivated media was the difference in the nation the two brothers compete for, despite being in the same family.[3]
