Universities of Tubingen, Strassburg, Berlin, Paris. Master of Arts; Doctor of Letters Cambridge. Doctor of Philosophy.

Career:

Appointed Professor of German, London University, 1902, but could not accept appointment. Holds Order of Red Eagle of Prussia. President of the Modern Language Association.

One of the first editors of the Modern Language Quarterly. Berlin; Schroder Professor of German in the University of Cambridge since 1910; (University Lecturer in German, 1884-1899; University Reader in Germanic, 1899-1910); Secretary (late Chairman) of the Special Board for Medieval and Modern Languages of the University of Cambridge.
