Karin Steinberger (born 1967 in Gräfelfing, West Germany) is a German journalist.

Steinberg grew up in a town close to Munich. After spending several months in China, Australia and Guatemala, she began studying comparative literature and sinology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich. She quieted and changed to Deutsche Journalistenschule.[1]
Steinberger came to Süddeutsche Zeitung in 1991. Since 2000 she editor for "page three" (Seite Drei), in which long form stories get puplished. In 2020 she became head of "page three" von and "book two" (Buch Zwei).[1][2]
Jens Soering and Steinbergs involvement
Steinberg was the one who brought back to light the case of the convicted murder Jens Soering in 2006 at a time, when he had no visibility in Germany.[3] She wrote several articel about him in Süddeutsche Zeitung and had contact to him on a regular term.
In October 2016 a full-length documentary film about the case, Killing for Love (German: Das Versprechen or The Promise), by Marcus Vetter and and her premiered at the Munich International Film Festival and was released theatrically in October 2016. In North American it premiered on 5 November 2016, at the Virginia Film Festival. Also in the U.K. (expanded into a six-part series on BBC Four) and the Netherlands (at NPO2 in two parts) the film was broadcasted in TV.
In an interview about the film's release in 2016, Steinberger said she didn't know what happened on the night of the murder, but in her SZ articles that appeared afterwards, she largely adopted Söring's story.[4][5]
The NDR revealed in 2023 that Steinberg worked closely with the circle of Söring supporters. When Andrew Hammel questioned the story of innocence in many details in 2019, Steinberger actively advised the group behind the scenes on how to question Hammel and stop him. She is also said to have helped to write a letter to the editor in which the “circle of friends” responded to the allegations.[4][6]
