Cameron Sofia Winters (born 27 November 1998), known professionally as KAVARI, is an English artist, musician, and record producer based in Glasgow, Scotland^[1]. Born in Birkenhead and raised in Lossiemouth, Scotland^[2]^[3], she first released the EPs If The Benign Was To Ever Be So Pure (2021)^[4] and Healing Spring (2021)^[5] the latter delving into deconstructed club and power noise, which brought her attention within the underground electronic music scene. Notably from artists such as Aphex Twin^[6]^[7]^[8], Hudson Mohawke^[9], and Mura Masa^[10], and being nominated in the 2021 Scottish Alternative Music Awards for Best Electronic category^[11]^[12].

She released her first solo album, Against The Wood, Opposed To Flesh, in 2023 which drew from styles such as dark ambient, musique concrète, drone, and power electronics.^[13] KAVARI has frequently incorporated themes related to horror, the occult, and fantasy into her work.^[14] ^[15]

Early life

KAVARI was born in Birkenhead as Cameron Pickthall. She moved to Lossiemouth, Scotland in early childhood and was subsequently raised there until her relocation to Aberdeen in her late teens for college, and then later Glasgow.^[16] She has stated that Strobe (2009) by Deadmua5 first introduced her to electronic music at 10 years old. She began DJing at the age of 12, and producing music at 17 in FL Studio and Ableton Live.^[17]She organised raves in forests in her teens due to lack of diversity in her local music scene.^[18]

Career

2020-Present: Self releases, Touring, and Debut Projects

Winters began posting music under KAVARI on Soundcloud and Bandcamp in 2020 with the release of her first mixtape Passive Memory Rejection (2020), which has since been taken down from both platforms. Her debut EP If The Benign Was To Ever Be So Pure (2021) was released via Scottish record label MELD on 7th May 2021.^[19] This followed with a secondary self released mixtape Altar (2021), Healing Spring (2021), and her second full length EP Suture (2022). Her debut album Against The Wood, Opposed to Flesh (2023) was self released November 3rd.

She began playing live shows and touring within the UK in late 2021^[20]. KAVARI opened for Ethel Cain for the Freezer Bride Tour dates in London on December 6th and 7th 2022.^[21] ^[22]

In addition to her solo work, KAVARI has co-written songs with other artists, having credits on songs including Yeule's "bloodbunny" (2023)^[23], Kai Whiston's "10-10-73"^[24], and Taahliah's Transdimensional (2022)^[25]. She officially remixed REZZ's Blue In The Face in 2023.^[26]

Musical style

Music critics have described KAVARI's music in a variety of terms including deconstructed club, ambient, breakbeat, industrial techno, noise, and experimental electronic. Her earliest demos, including those released on Soundcloud were described as power noise, avant garde, and glitch. KAVARI has been described as a "key star in the UK underground music scene", though she states that she "is not seeking out labels to fit her sound".^[27] She has denounced and mocked the genre label of deconstructed club for her music.^[28]

Influences

KAVARI's has stated her influences include Skrillex, Deadmau5, Lorn, Arca, Genesis P-Orridge, Crystal Castles, SOPHIE, Beach House, MGMT, Imogen Heap, Ethel Cain, the occult, escapism, horror films, and video games. Her biggest video game influences are The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Fable 2, Resident Evil, and Fallout 3.^[29]^[30]

Personal life

KAVARI is an independent artist. She is not currently signed to a record label. She has spoken on being diagnosed with borderline personality disorder.^[31] In September 2023, she publicly accused Kai Whiston of sexual misconduct that allegedly took place in May 2022.^[32]
