Jyri Kuukasjärvi is a Finnish music industry professional, manager, promoter,[1] agent, and entrepreneur. His career spans live performance, artist representation, festival production, and management within the international underground and alternative music scenes. Alongside his work in music, Kuukasjärvi is also active in traditional construction and cultural heritage building, combining long-standing interests in architecture, history, and craftsmanship with entrepreneurship.
Bridging Finland’s rich cultural heritage with its globally recognized metal music scene, Jyri Kuukasjärvi has developed a unique ability to navigate the interface between tradition and contemporary artistic expression, preserving historical values while promoting music that resonates worldwide.
Musical Career
Kuukasjärvi began his career as a performing artist. His primary instruments are vocals and synthesizers, and his background as a musician has played a central role in shaping his later work within the music industry.
He has been involved in several bands and musical projects exploring heavy, experimental, and genre-defying forms of music. His experience as an artist has directly informed his later work as a promoter, agent, and manager.
Early Musical Projects
Before his later projects, Kuukasjärvi was active in various underground and experimental music contexts, developing an artistic approach centered on atmosphere, intensity, and long-form expression. These early activities laid the foundation for his later work in heavier and more industrial forms of music.
Radien
Kuukasjärvi performed as a member of Radien,[2] a band known within the Finnish heavy music scene for its uncompromising sound and experimental approach. His work with Radien contributed to his reputation within underground music circles and strengthened his engagement with heavier musical forms.
Haapoja
Kuukasjärvi was also involved in Haapoja,[3][4] a project that further explored dark, heavy, and atmospheric musical expressions. His participation in Haapoja expanded his experience as a performer and collaborator within the Finnish alternative music scene.
Loka
Kuukasjärvi is a founding member of Loka,[5] a Finnish industrial and sludge metal trio formed by musicians previously known from bands such as Radien and Unkind. The band’s music combines heavy drone, sludge, and industrial elements, emphasizing atmosphere, repetition, and intensity.[6]
In Loka, Kuukasjärvi performs vocals, synthesizers, and drum machines, contributing to the band’s machine-driven and uncompromising sound. The project reflects his continued engagement with experimental and heavy music forms and maintains close connections to the Sonic Rites ecosystem.
Sonic Rites Festival
Sonic Rites Festival is an independent music festival based in Helsinki, Finland, dedicated to heavy, alternative, and experimental music. The festival is known for its focused curation, intense atmosphere, and strong connection to underground music culture.[7]
The event takes place annually at Ääniwalli and nearby venues and brings together international and Finnish artists working within doom, sludge, post-metal, industrial, and experimental genres. In addition to the main festival, Sonic Rites also organizes club shows throughout the year, extending the festival’s presence beyond its annual dates.[8][9][10]
Kuukasjärvi has been a central figure in the festival’s development as a promoter and organizer, shaping its artistic direction and long-term vision. Sonic Rites emphasizes community, artistic integrity, and continuity over conventional festival growth models.
Artist Representation and Agency Work
In addition to festival promotion, Kuukasjärvi works as an artist agent, representing artists and bands such as Sunniva[11] and Rats Will Feast,[12] among others.[1]
His approach to agency work is grounded in close collaboration with artists, realistic career planning, and sustainable development. His background as a performing artist informs his artist-centered perspective on representation and touring strategy.
Sonic Rites Management
Building on his experience as a promoter and agent, Kuukasjärvi founded Sonic Rites Management, a management company focused on artist development, representation, and strategic guidance.
The establishment of Sonic Rites Management represents a natural continuation of his career in the music business, combining hands-on operational experience with long-term strategic thinking and entrepreneurship.
Traditional Construction and Cultural Heritage
Alongside his work in music, Kuukasjärvi is the founder of a traditional construction company focused on heritage building and restoration. His work emphasizes traditional methods, natural materials, and the preservation of historically valuable structures.[13]
Driven by a personal passion for architecture, museums, history, and craftsmanship, Kuukasjärvi approaches construction as a form of cultural continuity. Rather than conventional leisure travel, he is known for seeking out historically and architecturally significant environments, which inform both his professional work and worldview.
The traditional construction business reflects the values and aesthetic sensibilities of its founders and has gained visibility beyond Finland, including international interest within heritage and craftsmanship.
Personal Interests
Kuukasjärvi’s personal interests include architecture, museums, history, and traditional crafts. These interests form a conceptual bridge between his work in music and his engagement with traditional construction, emphasizing respect for cultural context, material integrity, and long-term value.
