Justine Georgina Saunders, [1] a senior Australian public servant, is the Deputy Secretary / Chief Operating Officer of the Department of Home Affairs since December 2021. She was previously Chief Police Officer of ACT Policing.
Career
Saunders commenced her career with the Australian Federal Police in 1989. She spent the first 10 years of her career in ACT Policing before moving to national operational areas within the AFP, working nationally and internationally. She was promoted to Commander in 2005. In 2006 she was appointed as Australian Police Adviser, Australian Mission to the United Nations [2] for three years. She was promoted to Assistant Commissioner in 2012. Through her career in the AFP, she undertook detective roles and work in specialised investigative units in ACT Policing. In the her national operations roles she was a leader in key operational areas such as transnational crime, drug importations, people smuggling, counter terrorism and fraud. She was awarded the Australian Police Medal in January 2013 [3]
In October 2016, Saunders was appointed as the Chief Police Officer of ACT Policing [4]. In early 2017, Saunders initiated a major strategic reform for ACT Policing through the ACT Policing Futures program. This program lead to the delivery of the Police Services Model in 2019 for ACT Policing [5].
She left the AFP in October 2018 and took a position as Deputy Commissioner of Australian Border Force [6]. In December 2021, Saunders was appointed Deputy Secretary / Chief Operating Officer, Department of Home Affairs.
Saunders holds a Master of Leadership and Management (Policing), Bachelor of Social Sciences (Policing Studies) with Distinction and Graduate Certificate in Applied Management.
