Julius "JuJu" Ballo (born April 20, 2003) is an American amateur boxer born and raised in San Diego, California.[1]
Amateur career
National Tournaments
Ballo began his amateur boxing career by winning the 2017 California State Silver Gloves Championship in the 90-pound weight division at age 13.([2]). He continued competing in national events, winning the gold medal in the 123 lb Youth Male division at the 2020 USA Boxing National Championships in Shreveport, Louisiana. ([3]). In 2022, he participated in the International Invitational in Pueblo, Colorado, where he won five gold medals. ([4]). In 2023, Ballo competed in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Boxing, qualifying for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. ([5])
International Competitions
Ballo represented the United States at the 2022 International Invitational, where he won a gold medal in the featherweight division. ([6]). He also qualified for the 2021 Junior Pan American Games in Cali, Colombia, as one of 13 American boxers. ([7])([8]). His preparation for these competitions included high-altitude training camps in Colorado Springs. ([9]).
Training and Coaching
Ballo trains at Bomber Squad Academy in El Cajon, California, with head coach Berlin Kerney IV. ([10]). He has also attended training camps at the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center to prepare for competitions, including the 2024 Olympics. ([11]).
Personal life
Julius Ballo is of Chaldean descent. His father, Yasir Ballo, who immigrated from Baghdad at the age of 10, has been one of his trainers and a significant influence in his boxing career. ([12]).
