Julie Gholson (4 June 1958) is an actress best known for her role as Mary Call Luther in the film adaptation of Where the Lilies Bloom.

She was born into an Alabama acting family. Her father was part of a local theatre group and decided to keep the family in Alabama rather than relocate to California. She had one sister who became a ballerina.

Gholson was encouraged to audition for Where the Lilies Bloom by a friend in the local theatre group. She was attending Mountain Brook High School at the time. "It was a real fluke," Gholson told al.com in 2015. The film's producer, Robert Radnitz, told Roger Ebert in 1974, "We held auditions all over the state," he said, "and when we saw her, we knew we had something special."[1] One reviewer noted that Gholson "didn't need any professional experience -- she is Mary Call.[2]

She was ultimately nominated for a 1975 Golden Globe award for "New Star of the Year" with Valerie Harper and Helen Reddy, an award won by Susan Flannery for The Towering Inferno.[3]

Earl Hamner Jr., who wrote the script for the film, lauded Gholson's work, saying, "I thought Julie Gholson was just smashing in the role [of Mary Call] and I have often wondered what has become of her. She showed such promise." [4]

Ultimately, she remained in Alabama, attending the University of Alabama after her high school graduation. Gholson married Doug Carmichael, a retired Air Force pilot who flew F16s who was her high school sweetheart.. They had two children: Hunter and Kathryn. Gholson said they went on to move "all over the world" as a result of her husband's career. She most recently worked as executive director of an Alabama non-profit.

She has two grandchildren and said she has no regrets about leaving acting.
