Julia Brannan[1] is a British author best known for her Jacobite Chronicles series. The majority of her work is historical fiction, with the exception of A Seventy-Five Percent Solution, which is a contemporary novel.

Early Life and Education

Brannan, born in Manchester, England, is of both Welsh and Scottish ancestry. Throughout her life, she has had an intense fascination with literature and often used it as a method of escaping the real world.

She holds a bachelor's degree in English Language and Literature with honours from the University of Manchester and is qualified as a primary school teacher, holding a PGCE from the University of Aberystwyth. She currently resides in a log cabin in the woods of rural Aberdeenshire]], Scotland. When she is not busy writing Brannan enjoys exploring nature, both locally in Aberdeenshire and around the world.

Career

After finishing her degree at the University of Manchester, Brannan worked for six years in the Civil Services..[2] Since leaving that role she has had several diverse occupations including working as a call center worker, post office clerk, primary school teacher, and painter and gilder on the restoration of the Albert Memorial. Whilst writing to entertain herself has been a lifelong interest, writing full-time was not a straightforward transition. Initially she supplemented her income with transcribing and editorial work for other authors. Brannan became a full-time writer in 2017.

At the start of her writing career Brannan worked with an agent who promoted (unsuccessfully) her work to publishers. The Great Recession in the late 2000s meant that publishers were reluctant to take on new writers; therefore, Brannan chose to independently publish her books,[2] which have since gone on to have great success in the independent publishing world and are well received by a fan base of similar authors such as Diana Gabaldon and Susanna Kearsley.

Published in 2015, Brannan's first novel, Mask of Duplicity was well received among readers and critics alike.[3] [4] [5]This book is the first in the Jacobite Chronicles series, a series whose fictional characters are seamlessly interwoven with actual historical events and which has expanded to comprise six books and a companion series.

The companion series entitled A Jacobite Chronicles Story, focuses on individual characters from the original Jacobite Chronicles universe. These historical fiction books by Brannan are deeply researched in their portrayal of historical characters, such as Prince Charles Edward Stuart who features heavily in her work as accurately as possible. Any deviation from the historical accuracy usually receives an explanation at the end of each book, with an additional relevant information and sources made available on her website; www.juliabrannan.com.[6]

Following the final addition to the Jacobite Chronicles series in 2018, Brannan's impending series Road to Rebellion intends to reach back further in time to the very root of the Jacobite uprisings, in the 1680s.

Awards

Brannan has received several independent awards for her books including:

  • Discovered Diamond Book Cover Design of the Month for Mask of Duplicity[7]
  • Chill With A Book Readers Award for The Seventy-Five Percent Solution [8]
  • B.R.A.G (Book Readers Appreciation Group) for Mask of Duplicity[9]
