Joyce Owens (born December 3, 1959) is an American architect based in Fort Myers, Florida. Licensed in 1989, she is the founding principal of Architecture Joyce Owens, LLC [1], a firm specializing in Tropical Modern design adapted to Florida's subtropical climate[2]. In 2022, Owens became the first woman to receive the AIA Florida Gold Medal[3], the highest honor awarded by the Florida chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA)[4]. She was also awarded the AIA Florida Medal of Honor for Design in 2020[5]. Owens is one of two architects in Florida to have received both honors[6].

A fellow of the Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (FAIA)[7] and a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA)[7], Owens has completed projects in Florida[8], London[9], and Italy[10]. She was named one of Forbes' "Top 200 Residential Architects of 2025"[11].

Education and Career

Owens earned a professional degree in architecture from University of Notre Dame in 1984[12]. She later studied architecture at Kingston University, London, as a Rotary Foundation scholar, completing her postgraduate studies in 1987[13].

From 1993 to 2003, she was a co-founding partner at the London-based firm Azman Owens Architects[14]. The firm worked with clients in fashion, government, and retail, including Prime Minister Boris Johnson[15], fashion designers Alexander McQueen[16] and Vivian Westwood[17], fashion editor Isabella Blow[18], and retail brand TAG Heuer[19].

In 2004, Owens relocated to Florida[20] and established Architecture Joyce Owens LLC and Studio AJO LLC[1]. Her firm has designed more than 150 projects in both the US and the UK[21], specializing in coastal residential, commercial architecture, and interior design, with an emphasis on environmental responsiveness[22].

Owens served as the President of AIA Florida in 2017[23] and has contributed columns to The Fort Myers News-Press[24] and USA Today[25]. From 2019 to 2021, she was a member of the AIA National Strategic Council[26].

Architectural Approach

Owens advocates for Tropical Modern architecture[27], a design philosophy that integrates sustainability and resilience in response to regional climate conditions. Her firm, referred by Florida/Caribbean Architect Magazine as "The Coastal Architects"[28], incorporates passive and active sustainable design strategies into its residential and commercial projects for "sustainable architecture and modernist designs"[5]. According to 2022 BBEYOND Design Icons, "Joyce Owens is considered today as one of the preeminent authorities in the field"[29].

Hurricane Resilience Advocacy

Following Hurricane Ian in 2022, Owens launched the Rebuilding Florida Stronger Smarter initiative, promoting resilient architectural design in hurricane-prone areas[30]. As reported by Accuweather.com, her firm's projects on Sanibel Island and Captiva Island sustained minimal damage during the storm[31]. Her firm has shared strategies for constructing buildings intended to withstand Florida's weather conditions.
