Joya Mitra (Born on 21 September 1950) is a writer activist, chronicle storyteller, passionate wanderlust , wayfarer, friend of everybody and a lifelong student of mother nature. Joya was imprisoned without trial for a long time during the turbulent seventies for her ideals and sacrifices for the people of the country. She has been editing a bengali quarterly magazine Vumadhyasagor for 25 years. She paints such a picture through her words of the amalgamation of Indian mythology and culture that speaks of the unity and affection and also the diversity of this land of great traditional practices. In her early life she started her literary career by writing poetries but later prose became her medium of expression.

She has been awarded several prestigious awards for her literary works. In 1991, she was awarded with the Ananda Puraskar for her first prose 'Hanyaman', an iconic book of bengali literature. In 1999, she was honored with the"Sahitya Akademi Translation Award" . Honored with many other awards like including "Pranabananda Award" from Gandhi Shanti Institute.

'Shanti Saha Award' from West Bengal Bangla Academy. She was also awarded the "Sahitya Akademi Bal Sahitya Puraskar" in 2022 for her book " Char Panch Jon Bondhu (Short Stories)". In 2023 she was awarded "Sarat Smriti Puraskar".

Over the past three decades, at least eight novels, five collections of short stories, six books of poetry, five popular children's books, and countless other writings have taught readers to love their own land and surroundings. Women's consciousness, tribal life--almost always the point of view of an woman is her own.

She is also associated with various activities for saving our mother earth. Ganga Mukti Aandolan is one amongst many more. Her writings have been translated into Hindi, English and Tamil and Odia.
