Dr. Jovan Turoman' (Serbian Cyrillic: Јован Туроман; Uštica, Gornja Krajina, then Austria-Hungary, 18 January 1840 – Belgrade, Kingdom of Serbia, 20 August 1915) was a Serbian philologist and professor of Latin and Ancient Greek at the University of Belgrade.
Biography
He worked as a teacher at Jovan Jovanović Zmaj High School in Novi Sad from 1864 to 1875. After moving to Belgrade, he was a professor of classical philology at the Grande école from 1905 the University of Belgrade.
He especially dedicated himself to studying the life and works of Speaker Demosthenes by translating his speeches. Among the articles, the Demosthenesian defense of the ancient Greek language and literature (1863, Preodnica), then a critique of the Serbian translation Antigone in 1879, Javor and "The Literary Community of Serbs and Croats" (1874, "Javor"), in which he advocates planned translation in order to avoid duplicates. He is the author of several textbooks for Greek and Latin.
He was elected a regular member of the Serbian Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1894.
He was buried at the cemetery Almaško groblje in Novi Sad.
