Jovan Pantelić (Ogar, Austrian Empire, 16 November 1812 - Sremski Karlovci, Austria-Hungary, 28 April 1888) was a Serbian professor, pedagogue and director of the Karlovac Gymnasium (school)|Gymnasium.

He finished high school in Karlovac, and graduated from the faculty of philosophy in Szeged. After that, he attended the Serbian Orthodox Seminary, a school for clerics and academics.[1]

Career in education

In 1836, Metropolitan Stefan Stratimirović appointed him professor of the Karlovac Gymnasium (school)|High School. After he was elected director of Serbian public schools in Banat, he left his administrative post at the high school in 1842. He spent ten years in this position, occasionally holding courses for teacher trainees. In 1852, he received an invitation from Patriarch Josif Rajačić to take over the function of the director of the Karlovac High School. He introduced a new curriculum and strived for students to be educated in a cosmopolitan spirit. He was criticized for favouring German as the language of instruction for most subjects, which was considered harmful for the preservation of the Serbian identity. He was known as a good storyteller.[2]

Literary work

He was also a poet, who wrote the book "Silkworm", he translated Schiller's "Selena" and the book "The Friend of Women or, more sincerely, continued for life and led the fairer sex."[3]

Academic

He was a corresponding member of the Society of Serbian Literature since 1853 and a corresponding member of the Serbian Academic Society since 1864. [4]

His son was the Bishop of Šabac, Samuilo Pantelić, and his great-grandson was the Bishop of the Eparchy of Buda, Lukijan Pantelić.[5]
