Jovan Mašin (1817-1884) was a Serbian physician of Czech ancestry[1]who lived and worked in the Principality of Serbia during the 19th century.[2]He is remembered as one of the founders of the Serbian Medical Society.[3]

After graduating as a physician, Mašin left his hometown in what was then part of Austria-Hungary (now the Czech Republic) to seek employment in the principality of Serbia on 5 April 1846. He was for many years a medical doctor in Valjevo where he played an important role in containing the plague that broke out in 1848. As a volunteer physician in the Serbian military, he also held the rank of Lieutenant colonel during the List of Serbian-Ottoman conflicts incident and Serbian Wars for Independence in conjunction with the Principality of Montenegro. [4][5] Between the two Serbian–Turkish Wars (1876–1878), Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Vladan Đorđević was appointed Chie of Sanitation of the Supreme Command of the Serbian Army, and among the five chiefs of the ambulance corps, Lieutenant colonel Dr. Jovan Mašin was named to head the Ambulance Corps of the Great Morava. The others included physician-Majors Stevan Nedok (Timok Division), Josif Holec (Drina Division), Lazar Dokić (Šumadija Division) and physician-Captain Petar Ostojić (Javor Division).[6]

He was also Prince Miloš Obrenović's personal physician.[7]
