Jovan Demetrović (Serbian Cyrillic: Јован Деметровић; Dalmatia, Habsburg Empire, 1778 - Budapest, Hungary, 8 October 1830),[1]was a Dalmatian-born[2] Serbian writer and businessman who founded a textile factory in Budapest during the Industrial Revolution[3]and one of the benefactors and co-founders of the venerable Serbian institution -- Matica Srpska[4]-- with six others.[5]. They were businessmen Josif Milovuk, Gavrilo Bozitovac (1789-1856), Petar Rajić, Andrija Rozmirović, Đorđe Stanković (1782-1853) and jurist and writer Jovan Hadžić,[6] the initator[7].

In his home, the first meetings of the founders of Matica srpska were held in January 1826, where the activity plan of Matica srpska was outlined and a certain sum, 100 florins each, that the founders had to contribute. Demetrović who owned a cash register with two keys, was elected, as a member of the first Matica administration, as cashier treasurer. He performed that duty probably until his death. In his will, he bequeathed Matica 60 florins of silver. From 1814 until the end of his life, he continued without fail to subscribed to the Serbian book, being published by Matica srpska.

Works

Also, Demetrović wrote a four-act play in verse entitled Amanet ili Sreča u pepelu (Pledge or Fortune in Ashes), published in 1868 in Temišgrad[8][9]
