Joshua Barone is a New York-based journalist and critic who specialises in classical music and opera. He works at The New York Times as an editor and contributing classical music critic.[1]

Career

Barone studied at New York University[2] and the University of Missouri|University Missouri School of Journalism, where he was the editor-in-chief of the university's student newspaper, The Maneater[3]. He also wrote for the Columbia Missourian, and interned at The Wall Street Journal[4] and Esquire (magazine)|Esquire[5] magazine. He graduated in 2012.

In 2013, Barone joined The New York Times as a news assistant before taking on writing and editing roles in the Culture department. Since 2018[6] he has been a classical music critic. He has written profiles of artists including the performers Yo-Yo Ma[7] and Mitsuko Uchida[8], as well as the composers John Adams (composer)|John Adams[9], Ned Rorem[10] and Jessie Montgomery[11].

Beyond classical music, Barone has profiled the gay authors Andrew Holleran[12], Edmund White[13], Édouard Louis[14] and Garth Greenwell[15]. He has also written on theater, including stories about Andrew Lloyd Webber[16], Lin-Manuel Miranda[17] and Kiki and Herb[18], as well as film, including an essay about Luchino Visconti[19] and a history of Sergei Bondarchuk's War and Peace (film series)[20].
