Josephine A. Lauren (she/they) or Jo. (formally Anne M. Lauren) is an author, speaker, and community organizer who lives in the United States. Lauren is a queer, neurodivergent, and disabled individual, as well as an incest survivor and the co-founder of the organization Incest AWARE.[1]
Incest AWARE is an alliance of survivors, supporters, and organizations working to end incest abuse. Incest AWARE works to prevent incest, encourage survivor recovery, and promote justice. Lauren shares personal experiences of surviving childhood incest and illness to highlight these issues. They also provide training and writing workshops for media, survivor support organizations, and survivors.
Career and activism
Jo. earned a Masters in Theological Studies, then advanced their career as a minister, a teacher, then a designer. Later Jo. built a business focused on social equity and the process of design thinking to help mission-driven businesses improve community development. In 2017, Jo. became an anti-incest activist and community organizer.[2][3]
Today Jo. is recognized for raising awareness about incest and supporting better methods of prevention, intervention, recovery, and justice. Publications include Ms. Magazine, Yes!, America, Spirituality & Health, and Elite Daily.[4] Jo also consulted on a children's book published by Scholastic, Extra-Ordinary: Celebrating Neuro and Physical Diversity.
Lauren's work addresses "The Incest Gap,"[5] a term they use to describe the lack of appropriate prevention, intervention, recovery, and justice methods for incest survivors. They aim to close this gap to protect children, support survivors, and prevent reoffending.[6]
Jo. provides thought leadership and content sensitivity reviews on anti-incest topics.[7] Jo. helps organizations and individuals to promote anti-incest competency and care.[8] Jo provides writing workshops, consulting, and trainings for survivors, the media, and support organizations.[9]
Lauren has presented at and participated in events for NOVA (April 17, 2025[10]), Stop It Now!, ICASA, The Aplomb Project[11], the Student Organized Consent Conference (March 8, 2025[12]), and the Georgetown Day School Sexual Assault and Consent Conference (November 23, 2024)[13]
Works and publications
Lauren's writing focuses on creative non-fiction and memoir to explore the connections between spirituality[14], psychology[15], and justice[16] to encourage social change. They also write a monthly newsletter about their experiences on Substack called AILA (Anti-Incest Liberation Agents).
Personal life
