Joseph Nael Hayat (born April 1993) is an English journalist and television presenter who currently serves as the editor-in-chief at British Muslim TV (BMTV).[1]

Background

Hayat was raised in Sleaford, Lincolnshire, a town in the East Midlands of England.[2] He attended St George's Academy before going on to study at the University of Westminster, graduating with a Diploma of Higher Education in digital media and communications as well as a Bachelor of Arts degree in airline and airport management. He is also a licensed private pilot.[3][4]

Hayat's father currently serves as a councillor at the Sleaford Town Council.[5][6]

Career

Hayat began his career in July 2011 with Channel 4 as part of the third series of Battlefront, supported by musicians Ms. Dynamite and Charlie Simpson.[7] He later worked as a political columnist for Asian World News, writing pieces on BAME communities as well as racial bias in British politics.[8] He went on to work for RT as a stand-in presenter on Sputnik.[9][10]

In 2016, on deployment to Iraq, Hayat interviewd Yazidi multiple rape victim Nihad Barakat at Khanke Camp, under the invitation of Baroness Emma Nicholson.[3] During the interview, Barakat named Australian Jihadi Abdul Salam Mahmoud as one the perpetrators, as well as making references to senior ISIL commander Abu Diab and infamous British Jihadi Siddhartha Dhar.[11] In 2017, Hayat covered the inauguration ceremony of President Donald Trump for BMTV,[12] before joining TRT World as a correspondent based in Istanbul.[13]

In November 2018, Hayat joined newly-formed English-language Pakistani channel Indus News as an anchor based in Lahore.[14] In 2019, he moved to ITV News as a reporter, presenting regional headlines on Good Morning Britain as well as late evening bulletins for ITV Tyne Tees & Border and on Calendar from ITV's Gateshead and Leeds studios.[4][6]

In February 2020, Hayat was announced as the new editor-in-chief of BMTV.[1]

Other ventures

Hayat served as the elected MYP for the parliamentary constituency of Sleaford and North Hykeham in a non-partisan capacity from 2009 to 2011.[3] In September 2011, he won the Young Achievers Award at the North Kesteven Community Awards for his service to the UK Youth Parliament.[15]

In 2010, at the age of 17, Hayat founded HiAir, a charter airline, making him the world's youngest person to start an airline according to the BBC.[16] In May 2011, it was announced that HiAir sought to provide a scheduled daily service between Robin Hood Airport and Amsterdam Airport.[17][18] In November 2011, Hayat resigned as a director of HiAir.[19]

Personal life

In 2012, Hayat was a torchbearer of the Olympic flame as part of the UK's nationwide torch relay for the 2012 Summer Olympics.[20]

In 2014, Hayat married Salma Ashraf at a private ceremony in Covent Garden, London.[21] The couple have one child.[22] In 2016, they ran their own daily magazine lifestyle television program, The Daily Show with Joseph & Salma, on BMTV.[23]
