Joseph Harris Chappell

Joseph Harris Chappell (1849 - 1906) was a college president in Georgia. He served as the first president of Georgia Normal and Industrial College in Milledgeville, Georgia from 1891 to 1904. He oversaw the building of the campus and its curriculum.[1] His brother served two terms as mayor of Columbus, Georgia.[2] Another brother, Thomas Jefferson Chappell, was a lawyer, judge, and state legislator who served two terms in the Georgia House of Representatives.[3] Absalom Harris Chappell was their father.[3]

He was born in Macon, Georgia. He was photographed in profile during his brief tenure as president of Jacksonville State Normal School in Jacksonville, Alabama (before he took his job as the first president of a new school in Milledgeville). He was its second president.[4] He served as president of Georgia Normal and Industrial College from 1891 until he stepped down due to ill health in 1905.[1]

A portrait of him was taken[5] and he was photographed with his three brothers.[2]

He wrote Georgia History Stories (1905) and Baccalaureate Addresses of J. Harris Chappell, A. M., Ph.D: Delivered Before the Graduating Classes of the Georgia Normal and Industrial College, Milledgeville, Ga;, For the Years 1891 1904, Inclusive.
