Josep Caritg i Arnó (May 12, 1841 – February 6, 1897) was a Spanish landowner, real estate broker and politician. Member of the Conservative Party, he was the mayor of Badalona twice in the last third of the 19th century, during the Bourbon Restoration.
Biography
He was born in Badalona in 1841 within a well-off family. At first he succeeded her father in the family business, a grocery store, but he rented or sold the shop in the 1860s and started buying land, the most important pack of land was from the marquis of Rubí, like the turó d'en Claris, a mountain later named after Caritg. The lands were used for the grapevines and after a few years, he started to produce his own wine. In parallel, he acted as a rustic and urban real estate broker, and promoted the construction of households on his lands in Badalona and Llinars del Vallès.[1]
Politically, he was part of the Conservative Party and was an important member of it at local level. He was considered by his political adversaries as a authoritarian person, and historically is considered as a cacique during the Bourbon Restoration. He started his political career during the Glorious Revolution, and served as a city councillor of Badalona between 1876 and 1881 and between 1883 and 1891. During these years, he was also the mayor of Badalona between 1879 and 1881 and between 1884 and 1886. On both occasions he was succeeded as mayor by the liberal counterpart, Francesc d'Assís Guixeras. In his first mandate he created a charity house in 1881, and during the second mandate he fought strongly a cholera epidemic.[2]
Death
He committed suicide on 6 February 1897 in Premià de Mar. The main reason said by the media at that moment was his economic failure because a stock market drop, which meant that it was impossible for him to return the money he had borrowed from his clients. The family accepted the inheritance, and organized an auction of the Caritg's proprieties for paying the debts. [3]
Personal life
In his personal life, he married Josepa Argemí Vidal. They had five daughters, one of them died in childhood. Two married with prominent personalities of Badalona, Carme married Joan Surroca, a pharmacist, and Concepció married Martí Pujol, a landowner and future mayor of Badalona.[4]
