José Muñoz José Muñoz (Palma de Mallorca, June 15, 1965) is a Spanish businessman. He is the Global President and Chief Operating Officer of Hyundai Motor Company (not to be confused with the Hyundai Motor Group), and president and CEO of Hyundai and Genesis Motor America and Hyundai Motor America.[1] He was previously Chairman of Nissan North America |Nissan North America Inc.[2] As of May 2022, he is reportedly the most senior Spanish executive in a global automotive multinational company.[3]

Career

After the Chernobyl disaster, Muñoz abandoned his career as a nuclear engineer and moved to the Automotive industry. In 1989, he was hired as dealer principal of Citroën and Peugeot family showroom in Madrid, where he met his current wife, the dealer owner's daughter.[4]

In 1996 he moved to Daewoo Motor Iberia and three years later to Toyota Motor Europe, where he remained until 2004 when he joined Nissan for a tenure of 15 years, holding various management positions in Europe, North America and Asia. In 2014, he was named Chairman of Nissan North America Inc.[2] In April 2018 he was appointed Chief Performance Officer and Chairman of Nissan in China.[5]

At that time, Muñoz was considered one of the candidates to succeed Carlos Ghosn to lead the Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance between Nissan and Renault.[6][7][8]

In November 2018, Ghosn was arrested in Tokyo and subsequently charged with under-reporting his income in corporate filings,[9] prompting an internal investigation in corporate governance at the Japanese automaker. Muñoz was cited by the company as a “person of interest”. In January 2019, after a leave of absence, he resigned.[10] He posted his reasons for resigning on social media, stating that “Nissan is involved in matters that would divert its focus and will continue to do so”, and he committed to continue to assist with investigations.[11]

In April 2019, four months after his resignation from Nissan, Muñoz was appointed as Global Chief Operating Officer and CEO of Hyundai Motor Corporation and President of America and North America divisions.[12]

In May 2022, he was appointed a member of the Hyundai Motor Company Board of Directors,[13] becoming the most senior Spanish executive in a global automotive multinational company.[3]
