Jonathan Pierre Galland (born April 19, 1991)[1] is a French composer established in San Francisco, California, United States.[2][3]

Early life

Jonathan Galland was born in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, and is the only child of father, Frantz Galland, and mother, Nelly Deguin. Galland spent his childhood in the suburbs of Paris, France.[4] Fascinated by Classical music, he started violin lessons at the age of six[5][6]. Galland quickly developed an early appreciation for film music, and by age 13, decided to pursue a career as a film composer[4][5].

Education

Galland studied the violin and music theory at various local Conservatoires until High School, when he got accepted in the music section of the Lycée Jean Pierre Vernant.[7] While in High School, Galland toured as live technician for French singer-songwriter Pierre Lachat, and interned at Radio France as an editing assistant, as well as the Salle Pleyel as production assistant for orchestra and stage management[7].

After graduating in 2010 with a "Music Technician Certificate", Galland shortly attended the École Supérieure de Réalisation Audiovisuelle in Paris, but considering the school too technical, moved to the United States a year later to attend the Academy of Art University in San Francisco[8]. While still in college, Galland's composer reel already included actors Tom Cruise and Chris Evans[4][9]. In 2019, Galland graduated from the Academy of Art University with a Master of Fine Arts in music production and sound design for visual media[10][11].

Career

Upon moving to San Francisco, Galland started receiving music commissions for film and theater.Galland is also a member of the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences[12]. He has served as a music judge at the Juno Awards[13][14], and World Soundtrack Awards[15]. In 2022, under the Presidency of Joe Biden, Galland was granted permanent residency through the Alien of extraordinary ability Green Card (commonly known as the "Einstein visa") under the EB-1 visa program[16][17].

Musical style

Being a classically trained musician, Galland's compositions and scores are predominantly orchestral, drawing from post-romanticism and minimalism, but also electronic music. His musical style gravitates around composers Thomas Newman, Phillip Glass and Joe Hisaishi[4]. Child vocals are often heard in Galland's music, and are also part of his musical signature[18][19][20][21][22]. Since 2019, Galland has been collaborating with a young studio vocalist named Danica Lipetsky[23][24][5][25]. Galland also occasionally writes Jazz-influenced scores, ranging from Orchestral jazz[26], to Big band[27] and Gypsy jazz[28].

Accolades

Galland has received international music and film festival awards for his work as a composer[29][17]. Accolades include "Soundtrack of the Year", "Best Song of the Year", "Best Composer", "Best Original Music", "Best Film Score", "Best Trailer Arrangement", among others.[30] Issuers include the Global Music Awards[31][32][33], the Garden State Film Festival[34][35], the Virgin Spring Cinefest[36][37][38], the Festival du Film de Paris[39], the Wales International Film Festival[40][41], the Calcutta International Cult Films Festival[42][43], and the Cult Critic Movie Awards[44] among others[30].
