Jonathan D. Rudd was a lieutenant in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War, assisted the administrations of two Texas governors, and served in the Texas Legislature. A White supremacist, he helped oragnize the White Citizens Party in Harrison County, Texas and worked to restore White control over elections in the area after the Reconstruction era when Republicans had been in power[1] and African Americans had represented the county in the state house.[2]African Americans organized militias to defend themselves but were overwhelmed and kept out of politics for many subsequent decades.[3]
