Jonathan C. Kushner (born December 16, 1977) is an American real-estate executive who serves as President of the KRE Group,[1] a real-estate development and management company based in New Jersey.[2] He is credited with directing large-scale multifamily and mixed-use developments in Jersey City, including the Journal Squared complex, one of the largest transit-oriented projects in the region.[3] He has also overseen multifamily and mixed-use development projects throughout New York, Pennsylvania, and Florida,[4]
Career
Kushner joined the KRE Group in 1999, working alongside his father, Murray Kushner, on acquisitions and development projects. A CityRealty feature later highlighted his professional collaboration with his stepbrother, Marc Kushner, on several development initiatives in Jersey City.[5]
After spending a decade as director of leasing, in 2010 he became the company's president[6] overseeing all aspects of real-estate investment, development, leasing, and property management.[2][4][7]
Under his leadership, KRE Group broadened its focus on large-scale, transit-oriented residential communities across New Jersey and New York, notably within Jersey City's Journal Square redevelopment corridor.[8][9][10]
According to The Real Deal (2015), by his mid-30s Kushner's portfolio encompassed approximately 12 million square feet of commercial and residential real estate, predominantly in New Jersey, and he described the Journal Squared complex as "the largest project we will have built to date."[8]
In addition to Journal Squared, Kushner has been associated in media coverage with several other multifamily and mixed-use developments, including projects in Jersey City such as 808 Pavonia Avenue (Artwalk Towers),[11] as well as developments in Marlboro, New Jersey, and Philadelphia.[12][13][14][15]
Kushner has been included in some business recognition lists,[16] [17] including SmartCEO’s Future 50 in 2016[18] and ROI-NJ’s "Power List- Super 75" in 2025.[19]
Early life and education
Jonathan C. Kushner is the son of Murray Kushner and Ruth Dunietz Kushner.[20] He had one older brother, Aryeh (Ari) Kushner, who passed away in 2020.[21] His mother died of breast cancer when Kushner was two years old. Some years later Murray Kushner married Lee Serwitz (now Lee Kushner).[22]
They formed a blended family and raised their children in Livingston, New Jersey, where Kushner grew up alongside his step-brother Marc Kushner, an architect known for his work in contemporary design and as a partner at Hollwich Kushner Architecture.[23][24]The Kushners are of Jewish heritage and descend from Holocaust survivors. His paternal grandparents, Joseph Kushner and Rae Kushner, were Jews born in Novogrudok (then Poland, now Belarus).[25]
The family are benefactors of the Joseph Kushner Hebrew Academy and the Rae Kushner Yeshiva High School in Livingston, New Jersey.[26][27][28]
Kushner attended the Solomon Schechter Day School in West Orange, New Jersey, before going on to study at New York University, where he earned both an associate degree and a bachelor's degree in arts.[29]
Personal life
Jonathan Kushner is part of the Kushner family, a American business family based in New Jersey and New York. He is the son of Murray Kushner and the nephew of Charles Kushner, founder of Kushner Companies.[22]
He is married to Kim Kushner, recipe developer, and author of several cookbooks, including The New Kosher and I Heart Kosher. The couple have four children and reside in New York City.[30]
