Jonas Knutsson (born 15 February 1956) is a Swedish jazz and Folk music saxophone player, composer and pedagogue. In 2022 the was announced as the new artistic director of Umeå Jazzfestival[1]. His song 'Hymn' was used by Avicii in his song 'Dear Boy' for which Knutsson was credited as a co-composer [2].

Early life and Career

Knutsson was born in Umeå. Early on in his life he began playing alto sax in a local wind band and he became a member of the local jazz-rock band Cabazz whose members included drummer Morgan Ågren. In 1983 Knutsson moved to Stockholm where he studied at the Royal College of Music, Stockholm. Through his studies he came in touch with traditional Sámi joik singing, as well as traditional Swedish folk music both of which have been major influences on his music and have led to collaborations with notable artists in the respective genres.

Knutsson has performed with a number of Swedish and international artists such as Nils Landgren (musician)|Nils Landgren, with whom he has recorded several albums, and toured extensively with in Germany with the project 'Christmas with my friends' with amongst others classical vocalist Jeanette Köhn. He has also recorded with the duo 'Norrland' with Swedish guitarist Johan Norberg and bands such as 'Encore', 'Mynta' and Enteli with Lena Willemark and Bertrand Renaudin in the group Betrand Reaudin’s L’Arbre Voyage.

He has also led a number of groups in his own name, including Jonas Knutsson Band, Jonas Knutsson Quartet and Stockholm Folk Big Band, which he led together with Ale Möller. He currently plays and produces music with his trio New Orbits.

He is the current artistic director of Umeå Jazzfestival, a jazz festival held yearly in Umeå, Sweden and was inducted as member in the Royal Swedish Academy of Music in 2021.
