Johnny K. Davis is a United States Army major general who serves as the commanding general of United States Army Recruiting Command and Ft. Knox since October, 2022. He most recently served as commanding general of U.S. Army Cadet Command.[1]

Early life and education

Davis was born and raised in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area.[2]

Military career

Major General Johnny K. Davis was commissioned from New Mexico Military Institute through the ROTC Early Commissioning Program as a second lieutenant in the Infantry Branch of the United States Army in 1989. Upon completion of his Bachelor of Science degree at Cardinal Stritch University, Davis was assigned to the 24th Infantry Division at Ft. Stewart, GA. as a Bradley Fighting Vehicle Platoon Leader. After completing the Maneuver Captain's Career Course, Davis was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division in Ft. Bragg, NC. Following an initial assignment as 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment Personnel Officer, Davis served as the Company Commander of Alpha Company, 1-325 Airborne Infantry Regiment.[3] Davis was then selected to serve for two years as the Aide-de-Camp to the Commanding General of the 82nd Airborne Division. Davis was then selected to serve a second company command as the Delta Company commander in the historic 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) at Ft. Meyer, VA.[4]

After attending the Command and General Staff College, Major General Davis was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, where he served as a Battalion and Brigade Operations Officer and Brigade Executive Officer. He then served as the Aide to the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Joint Staff J8 Capabilities Officer. Major General Davis returned to Fort Campbell to command 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment and deployed to Afghanistan – Operation Enduring Freedom 10 as a Task Force Commander from 2010 to 2011.[5]

Following command, Major General Davis deployed to Iraq – Operation New Dawn and transitioned to the Pentagon, serving as Aide to the Army Vice Chief of Staff. Major General Davis attended the National War College at Fort McNair, Washington, D.C., and followed with an assignment as the Director of the U.S. Wounded Warrior Program. In June 2014, Major General Davis assumed command of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) at Fort Myer, Virginia.[6] After command, Major General Davis served in the Republic of Korea as the Executive Officer to the United Nations Command / Combined Forces Command / U.S. Forces Korea Commanding General.

He has earned the Airborne Master Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, and Ranger Tab, as well as the Combat and Expert Infantryman’s Badge.

His awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal for Valor, Iraq Campaign Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, and Valorous Unit Award.[7]

Davis earned a master's degree from the National War College in 2013.
