John W. Allen (born October 8, 1942) is an American ethnomycologist, lecturer, and author. He is the namesake of the mushroom species Psilocybe allenii. He is the first to harvest several other psychoactive mushroom species, including Psilocybe samuiensis.

Notable work

Allen is the author of Magic Mushrooms of the Pacific Northwest by Mushroom John, a 24-page booklet printed in Seattle and originally sold for $1.75 in 1976. While the pamphlet has been reprinted several times, the original printing, which was purple and limited to only five, has since become rare and collectible. His second publication was the Safe-Pik Mushroom Identification Guide. Allen authored the article "Wasson's First Voyage: The Rediscovery of Entheogenic Mushrooms" in the October 1987 issue of High Times magazine.

Personal life

Allen currently resides in Washington state where he continues to publish articles and research on psychoactive plants and fungi.
