John Towers Ward

Professor John Towers Ward (1930 - 1987) was a British historian known for his work on Labor history, Industrial relations and the Factory Acts.[1][2] As J. T. Ward he published on Chartism and on figures including Richard Oastler and Michael Thomas Sadler. His book on the MP and social reformer William Ferrand was published posthumously in 2002, with an introduction by Norman Gash.[3]

He graduated from the University of Cambridge with a double first in 1953, and completed his Ph.D in 1957.[1] He was a Bye-Fellow at Magdalene College, Cambridge in 1955 - 56.[2]

He was appointed the first Professor of Modern History at the University of Strathclyde in 1974, having been Senior Lecturer from 1963 - 74.[4] Prior to his post at Strathclyde, he was a Lecturer in History at University of Dundee until 1963.[4]
