Education and Career
John Stewart completed one year at Campbellsville University before leaving to join Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky as an hourly employee.[3] While working full-time, Stewart later earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from the University of Phoenix.
Stewart began his career at Toyota as a line worker at their Georgetown, Kentucky plant. Over an 18-year career, he was appointed to lead their Europe manufacturing division.[4]
In 2007, Stewart left Toyota to join Monomoy Capital, a New York-based private equity firm. Over a decade, he rose from Operating Partner to Head of Operations, then to Managing Director and eventually Partner. He also served on the firm’s Investment Committee.[5] Stewart focused on value creation through the application of LEAN manufacturing principles within the manufacturing sector, Stewart authored The Toyota Kaizen Continuum: A Practical Guide to Implementing Lean in 2011, a book detailing how the Toyota Production System can be used to drive operational value.[6]
In 2018, Stewart was motivated to establish a firm with a more narrow focus on manufacturing and value creation through operations. Stewart co-founded MiddleGround Capital with two partners.[7] Headquartered in Lexington, Kentucky, the firm also has offices in New York City and Amsterdam. The Amsterdam office, opened in January 2023, extends the firm’s U.S.-based operational investment strategy to Europe.[8] MiddleGround Capital targets control investments in mid-market industrial B2B and specialty distribution businesses across North America and Europe. In addition to its core strategy, the firm has developed investment theses in automotive, Industry 4.0, and infrastructure.[9]
In 2020, Stewart was named a Top Thought Leader in the Middle Market by Axial.[10] He has also been featured in several business publications, including a 2012 cover story in BusinessWeek.[11]

In 2023, Stewart founded Resolute Racing, a thoroughbred breeding and racing operation in Midway, Kentucky. Resolute acquired the former Shadayid Stud and the property spans 1,300 acres.[12]
As of 2025, Resolute has won multiple graded stakes races on four continents. Resolute earned Broodmare of the Year honors for its mare Puca,[13] dam of Mage (2023 Kentucky Derby winner[14]), Dornoch (2024 Belmont Stakes winner[15]), and Baeza (third in the 2025 Kentucky Derby[16]).
Stewart appeared on the Netflix documentary series Race for the Crown, which premiered on April 22, 2025, as a newcomer in thoroughbred racing, highlighting his ascent in the sport and candid personal narrative.[17] The series showcased Resolute Racing’s Kentucky-based operation—including its broodmare and racing program.[18]
Philanthropy
In April 2023, Stewart made a pledge to donate $10 million to the Gatton College of Business and Economics at the University of Kentucky.[19] In recognition, the college renamed its finance department the John Maze Stewart Department of Finance and Quantitative Methods.[20]
Resolute Racing supports industry aftercare and community involvement, including raising $500,000 for Thoroughbred aftercare during its 2025 Poker for Ponies event.[21]
