John Rees (born 18 August 1951) is an Australian musician, best known as the bassist of Men at Work from 1980 to 1984.

Career

Men at Work

Rees joined the band in 1980 as a friend of drummer Jerry Speiser, replacing Ron Strykert as bass guitarist, who switched to lead. He played on the first two Men at Work studio albums, Business as Usual (1981) and Cargo (1983), with writing credits on 'Till the Money Runs Out', the B-side of Overkill.

Rees was fired from Men at Work along with Speiser just before the creation of the band's third studio album Two Hearts, over a dispute surrounding their manager at the time, Russell Deppeler. Colin Hay was quoted as saying "The rhythm section got sacked because they wanted to sack the manager, who was my friend."[1] After their 1983 American tour concluded, Speiser had suggested replacing Deppeler with his sister, to which Hay vehemently disagreed. After discussing the matter with Deppeler, Ham and Strykert, Hay decided to fire Speiser and Rees.[2]

Present

In 2004, Rees resided in Fish Creek, Gippsland in Victoria, Australia. He was, at that point, a music teacher and played in multiple bands, considering himself 'the only member of the band that wanted to keep playing'. Namely, he played with the 'Swinging Blue Dogs', a 'punk jazz band'.[3]
