John Ray is an international, award-winning British television journalist for ITV News, currently based in London.[1]
He was ITV News’ first China Correspondent[2], before serving as Middle East and later Africa Correspondent. His reporting has earned him Emmy and BAFTA awards and an RTS nomination.
Africa
In November 2019, Ray was recognised by the Association for International Broadcasting for his reporting of the Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo.[3]. Prior to that he was the lead correspondent on the ITV News series, Fighting Famine that took the AIB award for continuing news coverage in 2017[4]. He won the One World Media Women’s Rights in Africa Award in June 2016 with the ITV On Assignment team for ‘Vicky’s Story’ highlighting the scale of domestic abuse in South Africa.[5] [6]
Ray took up his post as Africa Correspondent in January 2015 following two years based in London as ITN’s Diplomatic Correspondent.
Middle East
From September 2010, Ray was ITV News’ Middle East Correspondent. He covered the Arab Spring reporting from Egypt, Libya, Syria, Bahrain and Tunisia. He was the first Western TV journalist to report from inside Syria's borders at the start of the war [7].
China
In 2006, Ray went to Beijing to open ITN’s China Bureau. He received an Emmy and a BAFTA for ITN's coverage of the 2008 Chinese earthquake [8][9][10]. His expose of Chinese mining practices won the 2007 Foreign Press Association Media Award for TV News Story of the Year [11].
John joined ITV as Senior Political Correspondent from Sky News. Prior to this he was Political Editor at West Country Television following positions at the Western Daily Press, BBC Devon and the Warrington Guardian.
John Ray was born in Stockport and educated at the University of Manchester.
