John Petrizzelli Font (Caracas, June 8, 1956) is a Venezuelan journalist, writer, screenwriter and film director.[1]

Biography

He studied Mass Communication at the Andrés Bello Catholic University (UCAB, Caracas, Venezuela). He later traveled to the United States and studied Film and Television at the School of Arts of the Department of Film and Television at New York University (NYU).[2] His first jobs as a writer arose from his travels in Asia and Africa, where he was as a correspondent; it was there that he began to experiment with the documentary genre, one of the main elements in his work as a filmmaker.

John Petrizzelli's cinematographic art is characterized by his own style, very personal, sometimes experimental, other times introspective, which deals with both documentary and fiction, delving into the emotional and psychological world of excluded characters and communities, without ceasing to be critical in his views. The wonderful thing about his cinema is that he touches on difficult topics through his particular narrative form, making possible for the viewer to approach them.

Publications

His first book Negro Lógico was published in 1978 at the Rómulo Gallegos Center for Latin American Studies (CELARG), Venezuela. In 2018, he ventures again into the literary world with his second work entitled Historias para las posibilidades del músculo, published by Editorial Dahbar, Venezuela.[3] In 2020 he publishes El Conjuro de los cardos with Kalathos Editorial, in Spain. The three editions of his books are part of a collection of short stories and fragments written in poetic prose extracted from travel journals and photographic records accumulated over more than forty years.

In 1999, he edited En Ambiente, an LGBT guide in Venezuela and in 2006 he created el "Ciclo de Cine de la Diversidad" which he directed for eleven years. In 2018, he organized the 12th "Ciclo Cine de la Diversidad" (Diversity Cinema Cycle) in Madrid.[4] In these cycles, both short and feature films, including documentaries and fiction films have been screened, accompanied by cinema forums, artistic exhibitions, conversations and talks about the LGBT community.
