John S. Oakland (born 1946) is Chairman of The Oakland Group and Head of its Research and Education Division, The Oakland Institute. He is also Emeritus Professor of Business Excellence and Quality Management at Leeds University Business School.

Career

Oakland became the Chairman of The Oakland Group (previously Oakland Consulting PLC and O&F Quality Management Consultants Ltd) in 1985. He was also Head of the European Centre for Total Quality Management at the Management Centre, University of Bradford from 1987-1996.

He has been invited to act as an external advisor and consultant on operations and quality management for literally thousands of organisations including large complex companies across the globe in many different sectors, and several major public sector organisations.

Academic Experience

  • 1969-1972, University of Salford|Salford University. PhD student - established new physical methods of complex compound structure elucidation which led to the publication of three refereed papers and a successful PhD thesis.
  • 1970-1972, Salford College of Technology. Visiting Lecturer, teaching first degree, ONC and HNC students of chemistry
  • 1972-1977, Sandoz Products Ltd. (Research Chemist) Organised and ran a number of in-company courses and seminars for managers and trainees on a variety of technical and managerial subjects
  • 1977-1979, A H Marks & Co Ltd. (Operations Director) Continued to organise and run courses/workshops for employees of the company.
  • 1979-1987, University of Bradford, Management Centre: Lecturer/Senior L in Production/Operations Management
  • Professor of Total quality management|Total Quality Management (from 1987)
  • 1997-present, Leeds University Business School: Emeritus Professor of Business Excellence & Quality Management

Academic Contribution

Teaching

Oakland has directed a range of teaching programs at every level of Business School activities including Undergraduate, Postgraduate (Masters) and Executive Development (Short courses).
