John Marx is a San Francisco-based American architect. He is co-founder and Chief Artistic Officer of the firm Form4 Architecture, established in 1998.[1] He is a winner of the 2017 American Prize for Architecture from the Chicago Athenaeum[2] and the 2021 John Gates Percival International Prize for Literature from the Galena International Poetry Festival.[3]

Marx has written extensively on the topics of design theory,[4] especially on digital design,[5][6] placemaking in cyberspace,[7][8][9][10] and the metaverse.[11][12][13][14][15][16] Recently, he has explored the relationship of gender and architecture.[17][18]

He is known for his contributions to high-tech campuses and architecture of Silicon Valley. His design work includes VMware, Inc's Headquarters in Palo Alto, Netflix, Inc's Headquarters in Los Gatos,[19] Nvidia's original Headquarters in Santa Clara, Santa Clara University Dowd Arts Building in Santa Clara,[20] and the Gateway at Millbrae Station in Millbrae.[21][22]
