John Lipman (born August 25, 1959) is an American interventional radiologist, nonsurgical consultant of uterine fibroids, author, and philanthropist. He is the founder and medical director of the Atlanta Fibroid Center, a state-of-the-art medical facility that cares for women suffering from uterine fibroids and adenomyosis.
Lipman is a professional in the nonsurgical treatment of uterine fibroids and adenomyosis with Uterine Artery/Fibroid Embolization (UAE or UFE). He has delivered over 200 invited lectures on uterine fibroids and the UFE procedure. He has won numerous awards, including Atlanta Business Chronicle's Health Care Hero of the Year, the Atlanta Medical Association's 2019 Trailblazer Physician, a Lifetime Achievement Award from Americorps signed by President Biden, as well as a medical Emmy Award nomination. In addition, Lipman has been a member of many medical societies, including the Society of Interventional Radiology, the American College of Radiology, the Medical Association of Atlanta, the Cobb County Medical Society, and the Southeastern Angiographic Society.
Early life and education
Lipman was born on August 25, 1959, in Rochester, New York. He earned his bachelor's degree in arts from the University of Rochester in 1980. In the following year, he graduated from Georgetown University with a master’s degree in physiology and then pursued his medical degree at the Georgetown University School of Medicine; graduating in 1985.
Postdoctoral training
Lipman began working as an intern in internal medicine at Bryn Mawr Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1985. In the following year, he started a diagnostic radiology residency at Brigham & Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts. In 1989, Lipman was awarded Chief Resident in Diagnostic Radiology at the same institution. After completing his radiology residency at Harvard, Lipman began his career in interventional radiology as a Fellow at Yale New Haven Hospital, Yale University School of Medicine.
Academic appointments
After completing his training, Lipman was hired as an attending radiologist for Radiology Associates of Atlanta in Atlanta, Georgia. He spent 14 years in this community radiology practice before opening his interventional radiology practice in 2005. He holds an academic appointment in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Morehouse School of Medicine.
Hospital appointments
Lipman's physician career started in 1991 at Piedmont Hospital in the department of radiology. In the same year, he joined the department of radiology at the Shepherd Spinal Center as a physician. Then in 1997, Lipman also joined the Fayette Community Hospital. Later, he joined Windy Hill Hospital in 2005 and also joined the medical staff of Emory Adventist Hospital.
Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR)
In 1990, Lipman became a member of the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) and served it in a number of ways during his career. He is a frequent contributor to the society's annual meeting, served on numerous SIR committees, and participated in an international research consensus panel on Adenomyosis. In 2001, he was awarded Fellowship status in the society, one of the most prestigious honors the society bestows upon its members and later in 2011, the American College of Radiology (ACR) also awarded Lipman Fellowship status.

Lipman has been featured in interviews about uterine fibroids, adenomyosis, and the Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) procedure with several local and national news outlets, including CNN (by Wolf Blitzer), The Doctors, CNBC, the Health Network, USA Today, Jet, the Wall Street Journal, RollingOut, Family Circle, BlackDoctor.org, WebMD, and Sharecare.
Lipman produced a series of videos about UFE with Sharecare and was also chosen as the national physician spokesperson for the Fibroid Awareness Campaign for the supermodel, Beverly Johnson. In addition, he released a documentary "Freedom From Fibroids" in 2017, chronicling the transformation from suffering to a normal life of eight women with uterine fibroids and narrated by Atlanta icon Monica Kaufman Pearson.
