John Harris is a Canadian artist manager and educator who is the founder and president of the Harris Institute.[1][2][3]
Early life and education
Harris was born in Etobicoke, Canada.[4] He is a graduate of Humberside Collegiate Institute.[5]
Career
During his early career, Harris managed bands including The Creeps, Tranquillity Base, and Ishan People.[2] Alongside Bob Hahn, he co-established Rising Records, introducing Rockabye Hamlet to Broadway.[2][1]
In 1984, during the Papal visit to Toronto, Harris worked as a sound engineer and designed the sound system for the event.[1] Later, he founded the Domenic Troiano Guitar Awards.[2]
In 1989, Harris founded Harris Institute in Toronto, Canada.[1][6][7] Under his leadership, by 2018, the institution had been recognized as the leading private school in Jim Lamarche's Media Arts Education Report, a prominent index on media arts education in Canada.[4]
In 1993, Harris proposed a music hub in Toronto, initially calling it Music City Canada before settling on Metronome.[8]
In 2018, Cashbox Magazine awarded Harris a Legacy Award for his industry contributions.[2]
As a writer, Harris has written articles for music publications, and co-authored books, including Canada: Its Music.[4]
