John Gallagher is a journalist and author in the United States. He began his career at the Detroit Free Press in 1987. He has worked in Detroit and written about the history of the auto industry.[1] In 2017 he was inducted into the Michigan Journalist Hall of Fame.[2] He has documented the city's history for more than 3 decades.[3] In 2024, his memoir Rust Belt Reporter was published.[4]
He was born in New York City.[5] He participated in a strike in 1995.[6]
In 2019 he wrote a letter to Detroiters.[7] In 2022 he wrote about the history of discriminatory pending practices.[8]
His book Reimagining Detroit posits ways for the shrinking city to improve.[9]
