John Galen "Jack" McKinley (October 18, 1946[1] - February 14, 1980[2]) was an American stage manager and stage director. He was the stage manager for Hair on Broadway,[3] stage director for Hair in San Francisco,[4] stage manager for Jesus Christ Superstar in New York,[4] and stage manager for many[5] of Tom O'Horgan's productions. His family called him John, his New York friends and work associates called him Jack, and by 1971 he started going by his middle name Galen.[6]
Biography
Maryland
John Galen McKinley grew up in Hagerstown, Maryland. He lived with his parents, four older sisters, one older brother, and two younger brothers.[7][8] He attended South Hagerstown High School[9] until he left home on October 22, 1963 at 17 years of age and went to live in New York City, NY.[10][11]
New York
McKinley arrived in New York City and lived with Tom O'Horgan for a few weeks, until he met Harvey Milk and they began a relationship. McKinley moved into Milk's Upper West Side apartment, and they got a dog and a cat.[11]
