John F Bergstrom is an American businessman and philanthropist who is Executive Chairman of Bergstrom Automotive.
Education
Bergstrom attended Marquette University School of Business (’67). He graduated in 3 years and was awarded top student. He received the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award from the College of Business Administration in 1988, as well as the All-University Alumnus of the Year Award in 2003.[1]
Career
Bergstrom and his brother, Richard, started Bergstrom Corporation in 1974 with a small bar and restaurant in his hometown of Neenah. They were also restaurateurs and hoteliers before founding Bergstrom Automotive.[2]
In 2003, Bergstrom was singled out as Time Magazine’s Dealer of the Year.[3]
In 2020, Bergstrom Automotive purchased Cliff Wall Automotives’ Subaru, Mazda, and Mitsubishi dealerships in Green Bay.[4]
In 2023, Bergstrom was inducted into the Wisconsin Business Hall of Fame, benefiting Junior Achievement of Wisconsin.[5]
Today, Bergstrom and his son Tim as CEO operate one of the top 50 largest Car dealership|automotive dealerships in the United States. Bergstrom Automotive has over 35 dealerships and was named the 2020 best dealership group to work for by Automotive News.[6]
Philanthropy
In 2002, under the leadership of Bergstrom, Fox Cities Performing Arts Center’s board of directors and a group of volunteer fundraisers undertook a campaign to raise $45 million.[7] This was the amount of funds needed to build the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center.
In 2014, Bergstrom led fundraising efforts to get a Boys & Girls Club built in Menasha, WI.[8]
In 2018, Bergstrom led fundraising for the Fox Cities Environment Learning Campus, at the Bubolz Nature Preserve in Appleton, WI.[9]
In 2020, a group of investors led by Bergstrom gave Neenah, WI 4 million to 5 million dollars to fund a downtown ice-skating rink for public use.[10]
In 2023, Bergstrom Automotive launched a fundraising event with Make-A-Wish Wisconsin. This supported the wishes of children from Northeast Wisconsin.[11]
Personal Life
John is married to his wife Dianne. Together they have three children: Christopher, Timothy, and Elizabeth.
