John Erin Murphy is a Painter and Comics Artist.

Biography

John Murphy is an American painter, musician, and comic book artist. His work has been published in both the UK and US and exhibited in the US.

As a young adult Murphy received a scholarship to study animation at the studios at Laurel and Kettner under Disney animator Jerry Brice. He continued to study figure drawing and painting in the community college system of San Diego, as well as at the Athenaeum in La Jolla, and later at Academy of Art in San Francisco.

Career

Murphy went on to exhibit paintings in large group shows such as (Mod Art and Blue Girl Presentations). He participated in the Mod Art and Blue Girl Presents fundraiser that featured artists such as Shepard Fairey, as well as a short film review from David Lynch's master class students that raised funds to restore and save a newly identified historical landmark the building at, 2720 Fourth Ave in San Diego. Murphy is also a recurring participant in the San Diego Comic Con art show.

Commercial works include promotional art for the VH1 reality show Bands on the Run, including promotional art for the Soul Cracker act.

Joining the Navy dive community post 9/11 he served in both the Dive community as well as the EOD community. In 2012 he was medically retired following a TBI/spinal injury.

Since being medically retired, he has remained active as a painter and entered the comic industry in 2014, beginning with developing pitches for various comics publishers such as Monkey Brains Comics and Markosia Comics in 2014.

He spoke with NBC News about beginning the pitching process and the healing aspect of creating sequential art and examination of the psyche via storytelling.[1]

He has remained active in many public works projects, such as ( Public Works in Normal Heights San Diego - Veterans Advocacy Mural, design and painting), which was unveiled by mayor San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria (2014).[2]
