John Degotardi Junior (21 February 1860 - 14 February 1937) was an Australian born photographer. His notable works includes six albums, which documented the government cleansing operations during the Bubonic plague in Sydney, 1900.
Early Life
Degotardi Jnr. was born at Peacock Point, Balmain, New South Wales on 21 February 1860 to John Degotardi Snr. (1823 – 1882) and Nina Frankel.[1] He was one of eight children.
Career
Like his father, Degotardi Jnr. was a successful printer and photographer. He became an apprentice printer at the Government Printing Office on 6 October 1874, at the age of fourteen.[2] By January 1880, still at the Government Printing Office, Degotardi Jnr. became a printer specialising in photography[3] In March 1880, he was promoted to Zink operator and continued this position until 1893. On May 19, 1899, Degotardi Jnr. was promoted to photographer of the Public Works Department and worked in this position until 1919.[4] During this time, in 1900, Degotardi Jnr. was appointed photographer of government Cleansing Operations in The Rocks, New South Wales. He worked under the supervision of George McCredie to produce 379 photoprints equating to 6 albums, titled "The Plague Albums".[5] These are his most famous works. Degotardi Jr was first published in Gazette no. 421 on May 19 1899.[6]
He died at Lewisham Hospital on Sunday 14 February 1937 leaving his wife, three sons and three daughters. He was buried on Monday 15 February 1937 at Rookwood Cemetery.[7]
