John Angami (14 September 1916 - 15 September 1985) commonly known as Po John was an Indian contractor. He served as the first President of the "Southern Angami Council" in 1944 and was a prominent figure in Naga Polity and the Southern Angami Region. He was the founder of the John Higher Secondary School at Viswema, the third oldest school in Nagaland.[1][2]
Early Life
John Angami was born on 14 September 1916 to an Angami Naga family from Viswema Village in the Southern Angami Region. He grew up in Thevoma Khel of Khonoma Village with his aunt Mrs. Shreno and worked as a contractor in the NH-39 and was posted at Zubza. Subsequently he moved back to Viswema where he settled down permanently.[3]
Career
John Higher Secondary School
On 5 March 1945, John founded the John Higher Secondary School in Viswema Village.[4] The John Angami Award for meritorious students is awarded to toppers of the NBSE HSLC from the school annually.[5]
Naga Freedom Struggle
He was a member of the Naga delegation to Delhi to meet Mahatma Gandhi on 19 July 1947, just a few days prior to India's Independence. It was a eleven-member delegation comprising of T. Sakhrie, A.Z. Phizo, Khriesaneisa, Kughato, Kezehol Pusa, John Angami, Lhousituo and others.[6] Gandhiji appreciated and acknowledged John for wearing a hand woven Angami Shawl following his campaign of Swadeshi.[7][8]
He served as Acting President of the NNC for a short term in between the Presidency of Visar Viswento Angami and A.Z. Phizo.[3]
Personal Life
He was married to Nosachole John and together they had 6 sons and 2 daughters. He was a very close family associate of Vizol Angami who also briefly served as a teacher in John's school.[9] He was also a close associate of Charles Pawsey along with whom he set up Hydro Project for electricity generation at Kehoru, Jakhama and Kigwema.[4][3]
