John Albert Bolivar (Born July 21, 1945) is an American jazz saxophonist and flutist with a career spanning more than 40 years.

Bolivar was born July 21, 1945, in Houston, Texas. He is the second of eight children to Clarence Bolivar, Jr. and Elnora (nee. Chevalier) Bolivar.[1] Many of his siblings also entered the music industry, including saxophonist Michael Bolivar.[2] Bolivar began playing woodwinds as a child, influenced by other Houston musicians including Hubert Laws, who also grew up in Houston. Today, Bolivar plays more than 15 instruments in total.[2] After graduating from Evan Worthing High School, he studied music in the Air Force band and attended San Jose State University and Los Angeles City College.[3] Bolivar was also an airmain first class in the United States airforce.[4]

Today, Bolivar resides in Palm Desert, Calif., and frequently performs at Wally's Desert Turtle,[5] Pete Carlson's Jazz for Jazz Lovers Series and Woody's Palm House. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Palm Springs Walk of Stars.[6]

Recordings

His first solo album was released in 1988 titled Bolivar on Optimism Records.[7] He teamed up with jazz pianist Billy Mitchell for several albums including Billy Mitchell/John Bolivar – Live – All Night Long (1994) on USA Records,[8] HiStory of the Blues Vol. 1–3 with Joseph Bonner (2014), and Joy To Our World with Joseph Bonner (1997) on Akashic Records.[9]

Bolivar has also been a featured performer on several albums led and produced by Billy Mitchell including Blue City Jam (1984), Night Theme (1987), Cheryl (1987) and Faces (1989).
