John Albanese (born March 6, 1959) is an American businessman, numismatist, and the founder and CEO of Certified Acceptance Corporation (CAC).

Early life and education

John Albanese was born on March 6, 1959, in Akron, Ohio[1]. Albanese attended Rutgers University for one year before embarking on his career in numismatics[2].

Career

In 1979, Albanese established his own coin company, Coronet Rare Coin Galleries, Inc.[3] In 1986, Albanese became one of the founders of Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), a third-party coin grading and certification service.[4]

The following year, in 1987, Albanese co-founded the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) alongside Mark Salzberg.[5][6] Albanese served as the president of NGC and worked as a full-time grader.[7]

In 1991, while remaining Chairman of the Board of NGC, Albanese returned to the rare coin market and founded John Albanese Numismatics (JAN), a coin dealer specializing in high-quality U.S. coins[8].

In 2005, Albanese founded the Numismatic Consumer Alliance, Inc., a nonprofit organization based in New Jersey[9][10] that aims to protect consumers from fraudulent practices within the numismatic industry[11][12].

In 2007, Albanese founded Certified Acceptance Corporation (CAC)[13][14].

In August 2011, Albanese led a committee for the Professional Numismatic Guild (PNG) to define coin doctoring[15][16].

In April 2012, Albanese collaborated with eBay to develop standards for third-party grading services in coin listings.[17] Later that year, Albanese received the Abe Kosoff's Founders Award from the Professional Numismatic Guild (PNG).[18] The following year, he was honored with the Sol Kaplan Award by the PNG.[19] In August 2014, Albanese received the Clemy Award from the Numismatic Literary Guild (NLG)[20].

In 2016, Albanese was inducted into the PCGS CoinFacts Coin Dealer Hall of Fame[21], and in 2022 he was awarded the National Silver Dollar Roundtable Lifetime Achievement Award.[22] Albanese was also included in Coin World's list of The Most Influential People in Numismatics 1960-2020.[23]

Numismatics

During his career, Albanese has been involved in several significant numismatic transactions and contributions. In 2004, Albanese was hired as a coin marketing consultant for Odyssey Marine Exploration Inc.[24], estimating the retail value of over 51,000 coins recovered from the S.S. Republic shipwreck at more than $75 million[25].

In June 2005, Albanese brokered the sale of the Eliasberg/Lee specimen, the finest known 1913 Liberty Head nickel, for $4,150,000, marking the highest price ever paid for one of these coins.[26]

In January 2022, he negotiated the sale of an exceedingly rare 1794 Flowing Hair dollar, believed to be the first silver dollar struck by the United States, for a record-breaking $12 million on behalf of collector Bruce Morelan.[27]

Albanese also made contributions as a special guest author to The Comprehensive U.S. Silver Dollar Encyclopedia Vol. 2 in 2017.[28]
