Johan Christensen (born 23 August 1979) is a Danish theoretical condensed matter physicist whose research focuses on acoustic and mechanical metamaterials. He is a Research Professor at the IMDEA Materials Institute in Getafe, Spain, where he leads research activities related to metamaterials.[1][2]
Education
Christensen obtained a Bachelor of Science (2003) and Master of Science (2005) in engineering from the University of Southern Denmark in Sønderborg. He completed his doctoral studies in 2010 at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, where his research focused on theoretical aspects of wave propagation in structured materials.
Career
Following his doctorate, Christensen held a postdoctoral position at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) in Madrid until 2012. He subsequently worked at the Technical University of Denmark as an assistant research professor before joining the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, where he was affiliated as a research fellow until 2022.
In 2023, Christensen joined the IMDEA Materials Institute as a Research Professor, where his work concerns theoretical and numerical studies of acoustic and mechanical metamaterials.
Research
Christensen’s research addresses wave phenomena in structured media, including acoustic metamaterials, mechanical lattices, and metasurfaces. His work has explored topics such as subwavelength wave control, negative refraction, and topological analogues in classical wave systems.
His research has been discussed in peer-reviewed scientific journals, including publications within the Nature Portfolio, Physical Review journals, and other materials science outlets.[3]
