Joel Collins is a British executive producer and production designer known for his work on television series such as His Dark Materials, Black Mirror, and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. As of 2025 he has produced 21 episodes of Doctor Who. He most recently executive produced The War Between The Land And The Sea, the Doctor Who spinoff starring Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw.
He has been an executive producer at television production company Bad Wolf since 2017 and has received BAFTA and Royal Television Society awards.
Career
Collins began his career as a creature designer in 1992 on projects like The Flintstones and Muppet Treasure Island, gaining experience at Hensons Creature Shop in Camden, London. He went on to become an production designer, playing a key role in the creative team Hammer and Tongs, designing the films The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy and Son Of Rambow.
Collins gained recognition for his distinctive and innovative production design. Over the years, he transitioned into executive production while maintaining creative oversight of visual and narrative elements.
He is best known for his role as executive producer and production designer on the BBC and HBO fantasy series His Dark Materials, based on the novels by Philip Pullman. His work on the series earned critical acclaim and multiple award nominations.
