Joe Fortune is a British politician and co-operative campaigner who has served as General Secretary of the Co-operative Party since 2019.
Early life and career
After graduating from the University of Leeds, Fortune joined the secretariat of the All-party parliamentary group on Rail. He went on to work in public affairs, specialising in transport and infrastructure, before joining the Co-operative Party in 2009.[1] From 2014-15, he served as a political advisor to the then Shadow Secretary of State for Transport, Michael Dugher.[2] He was also previously Transport Coordinator at SERA.[3]
Co-operative Party
Prior to his appointment as General Secretary, Fortune served as the Party’s National Political and Policy Manager. As the Party’s transport lead,[4] he campaigned for and developed the party’s policy proposals for mutual models for rail and bus services.[5] Under his tenure as General Secretary, the Co-operative Party has promoted the causes of doubling the size of the co-operative sector[6] and expanding the community-owned energy sector[7] with support from its sister party, the Labour Party.
