Joseph Patrick Cardamone (born January 1st, 1979) is an American singer, songwriter, record producer, director, and actor. Cardamone is best known for being the frontman of the post-hardcore band The Icarus Line. Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, The Icarus Line was inspired by the underground punk and alternative rock scenes in East Los Angeles. In 1997, he formed The Icarus Line, a band known for their intense live performances. As the lead vocalist and primary songwriter, Cardamone's distinctive voice and poetic lyrics became synonymous with the band's sound. After disbanding The Icarus Line after the passing of guitarist Alvin DeGuzman, Cardamone's musical style evolved, incorporating diverse influences from punk rock, blues, noise rock, and avant-garde genres. Joe Cardamone also co-wrote and starred in the auto-fiction drama film, The Icarus Line Must Die (2017).
Early Life and Education
Joseph Cardamone was born on January 1st, 1979 in Highland Park, Los Angeles, CA. His father Pat Cardamone was a child actor and his mother was a Catholic school teacher.[1] Cardamone met future band member, bassist Alvin DeGuzman in the fifth grade when they were paired together on a school project, and the two became fast friends bonding over their shared love of Guns N' Roses. [2] He was later expelled from Saint Francis High School but by then the embryonic stage of The Icarus Line had already begun to form.[3]
Music Career
Early Years and The Kanker Sores (1995-1997)
The roots of The Icarus Line can be traced back to their early days as a high school rock group called Kanker Sores[4]. However, tragedy struck the band in 1997 when they faced the untimely loss of their drummer and close friend, Tim Childs, in a devastating car crash. This unfortunate event occurred shortly after recording their Pivot EP under the name Kanker Sores on Recess Records, as well as songs for a planned split 7" release with Treadwell[5].
In 1998, a fresh lineup of The Icarus Line emerged, featuring Joe Cardamone on vocals, Alvin DeGuzman and Aaron North on guitar, Lance Arnao on bass, and Aaron Austin on drums, solidifying the core members for the years to come. The Icarus Line's first tour would be alongside Ink & Dagger as they took to the East Coast.
The Kanker Sores soon changed their name, and were nearly called Joe Cardamone vs. The Icarus Line, but in the end, Cardamone opted for the cleaner moniker: The Icarus Line.
The Icarus Line (1997-2015)
The Icarus Line with Joe Cardamone as their leader and frontman released 7 studio albums. In 1998 The Icarus Line formed with Joe Cardamone on vocals, Aaron North on guitar, Lance Arnao on bass, and Aaron Austin (formerly of Naked Aggression) on drums. Before even playing a single show, the band booked an extensive East Coast tour with Ink & Dagger. On this first tour they sold an untitled demo tape, which consisted of the four Kanker Sores songs recorded in 1997 for the split release with Treadwell. Shortly after the tour, the band added Alvin DeGuzman on guitar. This reunited all four surviving members from Kanker Sores, and formed the core of The Icarus Line's lineup as it existed for many years, minus the "revolving door" of drummers.
Mono: 2001
Mono was the first album from The Icarus Line. It was originally released May 8, 2001 in the U.S. by Crank! Records on CD[6], and Buddyhead on LP.The album was recorded throughout two separate sessions in 2000. The first of these were conducted at the studio "Rotund Rascal" on Lankershim Blvd. in North Hollywood.
This initial attempt at recording the entire album with Mark Trombino as engineer went south and in a bold move, Cardamone fired Trombino, and resumed work over a month later with Alex Newport at Doug Messenger's Studio in North Hollywood, on Vineland Avenue. Having recorded albums such as At The Drive-In's before at this same studio, Newport moved very quickly there with the band. The album, being recorded onto tape, as opposed to Pro Tools (as was customary for most bands of the time) resulted in the majority of the album being "first takes". The album was also mixed quickly by the band with Newport at Messenger's Studio. It was then mastered by Mark Chalecki in the Capitol Records building.
Penance Soiree: 2004
Penance Soiree was celebrated as "the album no one was brave enough to make, before five LA punks decided to fuck the major label system and produce their epitaph"[7]
The End of The Icarus Line
In 2015, Cardamone disbanded The Icarus Line after a series of bad omens and the death of his bestfriend and bandmate Alvin DeGuzman. Cardamone had tentatively gone on tour with The Icarus Line for Scott Weiland,[8] while DeGuzman stayed behind in Los Angeles slowly losing a 3-year battle with spinal cancer.[9]
The Icarus Line played one show after Alvin's passing until Cardamone, broke up the band. They did not finish the tour with Scott Weiland who died shortly after of a drug overdose[10].
The Icarus Line were the subject of an autofiction 2018-released independent feature film The Icarus Line Must Die, directed by filmmaker Michael Grodner[11]. The film released by Dark Star Pictures, stars Cardamone as himself. The indie feature film[12] also stars musicians Keith Morris, Ariel Pink, and Annie Hardy (Giant Drag).[13]
Solo Career
Since disbanding The Icarus Line, Joe Cardamone has released four albums: Holy War, Quarentina, Quarentina Themes, and Dark Mark Vs. Skeleton Joe composed with frequent collaborator Mark Lanegan.[14]
American Primitive
In 2021, Joe Cardamone founded American Primitive: a Los Angeles-based production company and creative collective. Collaborators include Buddyhead Records co-founder Travis Keller. BuddyHead Records was a controversial music website and independent record label Cardamone co-founded with frequent collaborator Travis Keller in the summer of 1998.[15]
